Family Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can bring their loved ones to Canada through the Family Sponsorship program, which facilitates family reunions and the creation of a shared future. Eligible sponsors have the right to apply for permanent residency for their spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents, grandparents, and other family members through a variety of sponsorship programs.
To guarantee that sponsored family members can effectively integrate into Canadian society, sponsors must fulfill eligibility and financial requirements, even though the Family Sponsorship application process is meant to be inclusive.
Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorship
To become a permanent resident of Canada, Canadian citizens, and permanent residents may sponsor their spouse or common-law partner.
Qualification Requirements:
- The sponsor must be at least eighteen years of age.
- Legal recognition of the relationship must be obtained through marriage or common-law status for a minimum of one year.
- The sponsor cannot have sponsored themselves in the previous five years.
- The ability to sustain the sponsored spouse or partner financially.
Application Types:
- If the spouse or partner is already in Canada, they can sponsor you inland.
- If the spouse or partner resides outside of Canada, they may be eligible for outland sponsorship.
Processing Time:
- Depending on the applicant’s home country, processing times normally vary from 12 to 24 months.
Parents and Grandparents’ Sponsorship
Citizens and permanent residents of Canada have the right to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).
Qualification Requirements:
- For three years in a row, the sponsor has had to meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) requirements.
- A 20-year financial commitment is necessary to guarantee the sponsored individual will not need social assistance.
Through a lottery system, this program invites a selected group of people to apply after interested sponsors submit an Expression of Interest.
Dependent Child Sponsorship
Dependent children of Canadian citizens and permanent residents may also be sponsored to immigrate to Canada permanently.
Eligibility Requirements:
- The child must be younger than 22 and not be married or in a common-law partnership.
- If they are older than 22, they must be financially reliant on their parents because of a mental or physical illness.
- Legal documents like birth certificates or adoption papers are required to demonstrate the sponsor’s relationship to the child.
Other/Lonely Family Member Sponsorship
In certain situations, if a lonely family member has no other family in Canada, Canadian citizens or permanent residents may sponsor them.
Eligibility Requirements:
- The sponsor’s parents’ siblings’ spouse or other family members cannot reside in Canada.
- The sponsored relative needs to be either biological or adopted.
Super Visa
For grandparents and parents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, the Super Visa is a long-term multiple-entry visa. With multiple entries valid for up to ten years, it permits them to remain in Canada for a maximum of five years for each visit.
Qualification Requirements:
- A minimum income must be met by the sponsor.
- In addition to having current medical insurance coverage of at least $100000 CAD the applicant must pass medical exams.
- The sponsor in Canada must send a letter of invitation.
For individuals who do not meet the requirements of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), the Super Visa is a great alternative.
Steps to Apply for Family Sponsorship
Step 1: Verify that you are eligible to sponsor.
Step 2: Verify that the family members you plan to sponsor are eligible.
Step 3: Your application should be submitted to the Ministry of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) at the federal level and to the Ministry of Immigration Francization and Integration (MIFI) at the provincial level if you reside in Quebec. Together with your sponsorship application, you must submit your family members’ or relatives’ applications for permanent residence (PR) status. Your PR application will be checked thoroughly after it has been determined that you are qualified to sponsor.
Step 4: The application fee for family sponsorship must be paid.
