Canadian Experience Class
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is an immigration program under Canada’s Express Entry system. It is meant for temporary foreign workers (TFW’s) and international student graduates who have gained skilled work experience in Canada. The program helps them move from temporary status to becoming permanent residents. The CEC is part of the Express Entry system, which ranks applicants using a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Those with high CRS scores are invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada.
CEC Program Eligibility Criteria
Anyone applying for the CEC program must meet these eligibility requirements:
- You must have at least 12 months (1560 hours) of work experience in Canada. This can be full-time or part-time, but it must be under a valid work permit. The work should fall under one or more of the eligible skill types listed in the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
- Take an approved language test to meet the language skills requirements
- If you plan to work and live outside of Quebec, you can apply here. However, if you want to work and settle in Quebec, you may want to apply through the Quebec Experience Class.
You can apply for CEC even after leaving Canada. Just ensure you apply within 3 years of leaving your job in Canada and meet all the requirements to qualify for Express Entry.
What are the Main Benefits of the CEC?
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is designed to help temporary foreign workers and international students settle in Canada with support from both federal and provincial governments. Studies from IRCC, Statistics Canada, and researchers confirm that individuals who have already lived in Canada find it easier to secure jobs. This is because they meet important factors like age, education, work experience, and local connections, which help them succeed in the workforce.
One key benefit of the CEC is that applicants earn higher points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) under Express Entry, improving their chances of becoming permanent residents. Another advantage is the quick processing time. CEC candidates often receive their permanent residency within six months. Additionally, unlike other Express Entry programs, CEC applicants are not required to show proof of settlement funds when applying for permanent residency.
How to Apply for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Follow these steps to apply for the CEC program:
Step 1: Prepare Your Documents
Before starting your application, gather all necessary documents, including:
- A valid passport or travel document
- Language proficiency test results
- Education certificates
- Proof of work experience
- Police clearance certificates
- Proof of financial support (if required)
Step 2: Create an Express Entry Profile
The CEC program is part of the Express Entry system. You must create an online profile and enter details about your work experience, education, language skills, and other qualifications.
Step 3: Get an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
The Candidates in the Express Entry pool receive scores based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). If your score meets the requirements, you’ll receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
Step 4: Submit the Application
Once you get an ITA, you must complete and submit your application for permanent residency within 60 days. Ensure all documents are accurate and up to date.
Step 5: Complete Medical and Security Checks
You must undergo a medical exam and background check to confirm your eligibility to live in Canada.
Step 6: Wait for Processing
Once your application is submitted, the IRCC will review it. Processing times may vary, so patience is required.
Step 7: Receive Your Permanent Residence Confirmation
If approved, you will get a document that confirms your permanent residency. You will need this when you enter Canada.
How Long Does CEC Processing Take?
As per IRCC’s estimates, CEC applications take about six months to process after you submit a complete application. This doesn’t include the time spent waiting for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) through the Express Entry system
