Federal Skilled Trade
Skilled workers in trades from around the world can apply for permanent residency within Canada through the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). This program is part of an Express Entry system, making the immigration process faster and more efficient for tradespeople. Since its launch in 2013, it has been the only immigration program designed specifically for skilled trade professionals. Getting help from an experienced immigration consultant can make applying for FSTP easier.
Benefits of the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) was created to help skilled workers in trades immigrate to Canada and address labor shortages. With Canada’s aging workforce and fewer young workers entering trades, this program plays a key role in filling essential jobs. Here are some key benefits:
- Quick Path to Permanent Residency: Applicants can become permanent residents in about six months through an Express Entry system.
- No Education Requirement: Unlike other Express Entry programs, FSTP does not require proof of education, making the process easier. Special draws may also be held for FSTP applicants.
- Higher CRS Score with PNP Nomination: Receiving a provincial nomination adds 600 points to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, increasing your chances of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
- Extra Points for Work Experience in Canada: Having Canadian work experience earns you additional CRS points, improving your job opportunities.
- Stronger Job Prospects: Express Entry is highly competitive, but having work experience in Canada and industry connections gives you an advantage when applying.
Requirements for FSTP
- Experience: You must have 2 years of full-time work experience or an equal amount of part-time experience in the past 5 years before applying. In Canada, skilled trades are classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system and include the following categories of jobs:
Major Group 72 | Jobs in industrial work, electrical trades, and construction |
Major Group 73 | Jobs in maintenance and operating heavy equipment |
Major Group 82 | The Supervisors and skilled workers in farming, mining, and natural resources |
Major Group 92 | Supervisors in factories, manufacturing, and utility operations |
Minor Group 6320 | Butchers, cooks, and bakers |
Unit Group 62200 | Professional chefs managing and preparing food in kitchens |
- Job Offer: You must either have two job offers from Canadian employers lasting at least one year or possess a qualification certificate from a provincial or territorial authority in Canada.
- Language: You need at least a CLB 5 in Speaking and Listening, and CLB 4 in Reading and Writing.
- Proving Your Skill Level: Show that your skills match the main duties required for the job.
- Settlement Funds: You need to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family in Canada. But if you have the job offer or are already working in Canada with a valid permit, you don’t need to show proof of money.
