Federal Skilled Worker
The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) helps people from other countries move to Canada. It selects skilled individuals worldwide to live and work in Canada. This program uses a point-based system to assess factors like age, language skills, education, work experience, and job type. It works alongside Canada’s Express Entry system.
The Express Entry system of Canada manages three different immigration programs which also include the FSWP. Interestingly, Canada became the first country to use a points-based system to select qualified applicants. Working with an experienced immigration consultant may help you score higher by accurately presenting your qualifications.
How FSWP Makes Immigration Easier
The FSWP plays an important role in allowing thousands of foreign nationals to immigrate to Canada every year. Through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) in Express Entry, the program selects candidates who meet the eligibility criteria, enabling them to apply for permanent residency through FSWP and other immigration pathways. FSWP is a great option for people who aren’t skilled trades professionals and haven’t worked in Canada before. Candidates do not need Canadian work experience, but they must meet a minimum points requirement based on certain criteria.
- Work Experience – You need constant work experience of at least 12 months in a skilled job from the past 10 years. The work experience must be classified under the NOC’s TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3.
- Language Skills – You must score at least CLB level 7 on a recognized English or French language test.
- Education – Your education should be equal to a Canadian high school diploma.
- Intention to Settle – You must show your intent to live in Canada.
- Financial Support – Prove you have enough money to support yourself while in Canada.
These factors help determine how many points you get on the FSWP grid. To be eligible, you need to score at least 67 points from total out of 100. If you meet this requirement, you can create a profile and enter an Express Entry system.
FSWP Eligibility Scoring Requirements
Selection Factor | Maximum Points |
---|---|
Language Ability | 28 |
Education | 25 |
Work Experience | 15 |
Age | 12 |
Arranged Employment | 10 |
Adaptability | 10 |
To qualify for the FSW program, you should have work experience of at least 1 year in a job classified under skill types A, B, or 0.
Skill Type 0 – This includes management jobs in areas like restaurants, wholesale trade, food services, and more.
Skill Level A – This covers professions like law, engineering, IT, as well as construction that require a degree from a university.
Skill Level B – These are technical jobs that require a diploma or similar level of education.
Does the FSW Program Have an Age Limit?
No, there is not a specific age limit for the FSW program. However, as you get older, you will earn fewer points in the age category. To qualify, you’ll need to make up for it by scoring higher in other areas.
Steps to Apply for the FSWP
- Step 1: Check your Eligibility: Ensure that you meet the necessary criteria for each of the factors. Knowing your score of FSWP will surely help you understand if you are eligible for the program.
- Step 2: Collect the Required Documents: Collect important documents such as your language test results, Educational Credential Assessment, valid passport, as well as other forms of identification needed for the FSWP application through Express Entry.
- Step 3: Create an Express Entry Profile: Creating the profile is very important. To increase your chances of a higher rank in the CRS, consider getting help from a skilled immigration consultant to create a strong profile.
- Step 4: Boost CRS Score: Take steps to improve your score of CRS by seeking advice from expert immigration professionals.
- Step 5: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): Once you receive the ITA, it marks an important step in your immigration process. After you receive the ITA, you can proceed with your application for permanent residency under FSWP.
- Step 6: Submit the e-APR: Submit your e-APR, including security background checks, police clearance certificates, and proof of medical examinations.
