Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a special work permit for international graduates who complete a study program in Canada. With a PGWP, you can work for any employer, anywhere within Canada, and for as many hours as you want. The permit is valid for a period between 8 months and 3 years, depending on the length of your study program, the program level, and the expiration date of your passport, whichever comes first. Gaining Canadian work experience through a PGWP can greatly improve your chances of becoming a permanent resident.
Key Facts About PGWP
- Validity: The PGWP lasts from 8 months to 3 years, usually matching the length of your study program, but no more than 3 years.
- Work Permission: After applying for the PGWP, you can work full-time right away if your study permit is still valid. No extra work permit is needed.
- Part-Time Programs or Fast-Track Programs: The PGWP will match the duration of your full-time program, even if you studied part-time or finished early.
- One-Time Use: You can only get a PGWP once. If you already had one after finishing a previous program, you can’t apply again.
- In-Person Study Requirement: To qualify, over half of your course must be attended in person.
- Applying from Outside Canada: After completing your studies effectively, you can apply for PGWP from another country.
Eligibility for PGWP
In order to qualify for PGWP, international students need to be 18 or older and have completed a full-time program lasting a minimum of 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) within Canada. They need to submit their application no later than 180 days after completing their studies.
If you are applying from Canada, you must have legal immigration status. If your study permit has expired, you may request visitor status before submitting an application for a PGWP. Those who apply before the study permit expires can start working full-time while waiting for approval. PGWP applications can also be submitted from outside Canada.
How Much Time Does It Take to Receive a PGWP?
Processing a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) typically takes between 80 and 180 days. If you apply before your study permit expires, you are allowed to work within Canada while waiting for approval. You must submit your PGWP application within 180 days after completing all program requirements. If you depart Canada after finishing your studies, you can apply for a PGWP from another country. However, applying from outside Canada might require extra documents, depending on the visa office processing your request.
Am I Able to Work After Graduating Before Applying for PGWP?
International graduates can legally work in Canada if they apply for the PGWP before their study permit runs out. They don’t need a work permit during the processing of their PGWP application. If their study permit has expired, they may still apply by restoring their status, as long as they have been without status for under 90 days.
