The adult right of Canadian citizenship fee was raised on March 31, 2025. The new fee is $119.75 and will now apply to permanent residents who applied for Canadian citizenship or plan to apply on or after this date.
This change will not impact those who fully completed an online application for Canadian citizenship before midnight on March 31 and paid the $100 fee.
Who is Impacted by this Increase?
People who are 18 or older and permanent residents must pay 2 fees to apply for Canadian citizenship.
- ($530) for processing.
- Citizenship right fee (currently $119.75).
Adults should anticipate paying $649.75 in total as opposed to the $630 fee that was charged previously to this group before March 31. Additionally, the increased right of citizenship fee must be paid by stateless adults who were born to a Canadian parent.
Fees for Minor
When a minor (under 18) applies for citizenship, they only must pay $100, which is the processing fee and which has not changed.
Obtaining Citizenship in Canada by Naturalization
If a person meets the requirements specified by the Canadian Citizenship Act, they can become a citizen of Canada by naturalization.
- Status: Have status as a permanent resident of Canada.
- Presence: Fulfill Canada’s requirements for physical presence, which include having lived there for at least 1095 days (3 years) in the five years before applying.
- Tax: Within those 5-year period, they must file their taxes if required by law.
- Passing Citizenship test: Be between 18 and 54 years of age and pass a citizenship test in Canada.
- Language: Exhibit fluency in either English or French (CLB 4).
The requirement of physical presence is not applicable to minors.
Citizenship in Canada is conferred either in person or through a virtual ceremony. The oath of citizenship must be taken by anyone 14 years of age or older during the ceremony.
