Most people from other countries need a work permit to work in Canada. This document allows them to legally work and get paid by a Canadian employer. However, some types of jobs for foreign workers do not require a work permit to work in Canada. Below are the types of jobs that allow you to work without a work permit.
Types of Jobs in Canada That Do Not Require a Work Permit
Some jobs in Canada do not need a work permit, but just being on the list is not enough. You also need to meet certain rules for that job to qualify.
Athlete or Coach
Professional athletes and coaches can take part in sports events in Canada without needing a work permit. Their work must be short-term and related to the competition.
Aviation Accident or Incident Investigator
Investigators who look into aviation accidents or incidents do not need a work permit if they are working for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Their job is to help make sure safety standards are followed.
Business Visitor
Business visitors can attend meetings, conferences, and other work-related events in Canada without needing a work permit. Their stay is usually short, and they cannot be directly employed by a Canadian company.
Civil Aviation Inspector
Civil aviation inspectors who check air traffic safety and rules in Canada do not need a work permit. Their job is to make sure air travel in Canada is safe.
Clergy
Religious workers who offer spiritual guidance or lead religious ceremonies do not need a work permit. Their work must be with a recognized religious organization.
Convention Organizer
If you organize or manage international conventions or meetings, you are allowed to work without a permit. However, this exemption only applies to the organizers themselves. Anyone providing hands-on services during the event, such as technical support, will still need proper work authorization.
Crew Member
If you work as a foreign truck driver, bus driver, or work in shipping or aviation, you are allowed to work without a permit. To qualify, you must meet two conditions: your employer must be based outside of Canada, and the vehicles you work on must be used for international transport of cargo or passengers. Additionally, your work must involve operating the vehicles or assisting passengers.
Emergency Service Provider
People who are helping during disasters or critical situations can enter Canada without needing a work permit. Their work is essential for public safety and to help others.
Examiner and Evaluator
If you are a professor or an academic expert from another country, you may not need a work permit. This includes people who assess academic projects, qualifications, or research work. Their jobs are usually tied to universities or research institutions in Canada.
Expert Witness or Investigator
If you are in Canada to give evidence in front of a court, tribunal, or regulatory body, you might not need a work permit.
Family Member of a Foreign Representative
Immediate family members (like spouses and children) of foreign representatives in Canada, such as diplomats or international government officials, do not need a work permit to work.
Foreign Government Officer or Representative
Foreign government officers or representatives working in Canada under international agreements are not required to have a work permit. Their work involves diplomatic, consular, or international relations duties.
Health Care Student
Medical and nursing students can do clinical internships or training in Canada without needing a work permit. These internships are part of their studies.
Judge, Referee, or Similar Official
Judges, referees, or officials at international events in Canada do not require a work permit. Their work is temporary and focused on managing the event efficiently.
Military Personnel
If you are a member of a foreign military, you might not need a work permit to work in Canada. To qualify, you must have orders showing you are entering Canada under the Visiting Forces Act.
News Reporter or Film and Media Crew
Journalists, reporters, and media crews covering events in Canada do not need a work permit. This exemption lets them do their reporting and filming temporarily.
Producer or Staff Member Working on Advertisements
People working on advertisements in Canada, like producers and staff, do not need a work permit. Their jobs are usually part of short-term media production projects. Your stay should be short, no longer than two weeks.
Performing Artist
Performing artists, including musicians, dancers, and actors, can perform in Canada without a work permit. Their stay is typically for performances or artistic events. You can stay in Canada for a limited time but are not allowed to participate in the production of content for radio, television, or film.
Public Speaker
Public speakers giving lectures, workshops, or seminars in Canada do not need a work permit. This applies to experts invited to speak at short-term events, with a stay of up to five days.
Short-Term Highly-Skilled Worker
Skilled workers may work in Canada for short periods without a work permit, but only if enough time has passed since their last exemption. They can work for up to 15 days without a permit if at least six months have passed since their last exemption or for up to 30 days if 12 months have passed. This exemption applies only to workers living outside Canada.
Short-Term Researcher
Researchers working on short-term projects (less than 120 days) at Canadian institutions do not need a work permit, as long as their work is related to academic or scientific research.
Student Working Off-Campus
Full-time students with a study permit can work off-campus without needing a separate work permit, as long as they are studying at an approved school.
Student Working On-Campus
Students attending Canadian educational institutions can work on-campus without a work permit. This allows them to gain work experience while pursuing their studies.
